More than 20 years ago, as a children’s English as a foreign language curriculum developer and materials author new to Taiwan, I found Brian ‘Funshine’ Alexander. He was a voice actor for my very first course for kids, and, after discovering the full range of his talents, I have worked with him ever since any time I need a voice actor, composer, singer, and/or producer for one of my projects, which have ranged from character voice acting to operating and voicing a puppet on a television English learning series, to many, many language learning songs. I hate what I call “kiddy-la-la” songs. Brian can create fantastic songs that kids love and that won’t drive adults insane. I came to him with one very big project with a lot of special requests that would challenge his capabilities. The project was for him to create 109 songs for very young learners teaching language targets specified by me. My special requirements included: 1) every song should be of a different musical genre from around the world. 2) Young children should be able to hum along after one listening and start singing along after the second. 3) The songs needed to feature a variety of both male and female talented vocalists. The resulting collection of children’s songs were absolutely world-class. Brian works very diligently and always delivers milestones on schedule. He actively seeks input from his clients at various stages in the creation of a product. I told him that I didn’t want to control every detail of the development of songs, but rather challenged him to take creative license. I’m a linguist, not a songwriter, so I trusted his expertise and never regretted it.
